The May Issue

The Modern Nude. We speak to Paul Kooiker, Carmen Winant, Olivia Arthur and Lyle Ashton Harris about what it means to photograph nudes in a more expansive societal climate. Our accompanying features this month celebrate the work of Joana Choumali, Vanessa Winship and Phoebe Kiely, and Pablo Chacon.

The lonely early morning walks of a woman in a moment of personal crisis resulted in an “everyday embroidered diary of things that cannot be said”, making Joana Choumali the first African to win the Prix Pictet award.

In an era of Black Lives Matter and MeToo, what happens to the nude in photography? Are new approaches evolving, and can old images be rethought? And how does this impact straight white men who shoot nudes? Modern Nudes explores how these shifts are affecting both photographer’s work and its reception.

Vanessa Winship and Phoebe Kiely take up residence along Cumbria’s long-neglected seaboard, “a place of great fragility and also great resilience”

Pablo Chacón pays homage to gravedigger Leoncio Badía Navarro, who collected objects belonging to people executed by the Franco regime after the Spanish Civil War. Kindness, he says, can be found in the darkest moments.

Despite inevitable cancellations due to Covid 19, we believe there is a space to celebrate the work that would have been. In Agenda this month, Shirin Neshat is Photo London’s Master of Photography, Paris’ Musée du Quai Branly brings together 26 non-European artists for the Who is Gazing? exhibition, plus a selection of would-be openings from around the world.

This month’s projects are drawn from the photography shortlist for this year’s International Festival of Fashion, Photography and Fashion Accessories in Hyeres, South of France. Stefanie Moshammer documents the playful, visual cues that indicate the ageing of her grandparents. Kata Geibl imagines a world where capitalism falls, and Clemence Elman interrogantes her family’s bourgeois values. Andras Ladosci too takes us through his practice.

Our Creative Brief this month is Lucy Conticello, the photo editor of M, the celebrated weekly supplement of the French Le Monde. In tech, Damien Demolder gives his verdict on Sony’s a7R IV.
